🥄 Classic Swedish Pickled Herring (Inlagd Sill med Kockens Kryddor)

Homemade pickled herring is easier than you think — and with Kockens Pickled Herring Spice, you get that perfect traditional flavor every time.

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 4–5 salted herring fillets (sillfilĂ©er), soaked and rinsed

  • 1½ dl (150 ml) white vinegar (12%)

  • 3 dl (300 ml) water

  • 2 dl (200 ml) sugar

  • 2–3 tbsp Kockens Pickled Herring Spice

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

  • Optional: a few slices of carrot or lemon for flavor and decoration

  • A clean glass jar with lid (approx. 1-liter size)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. If using salted herring: soak fillets in cold water for 12–24 hours, changing the water a few times. (Skip this if using ready-soaked herring.)

  2. In a saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, and Kockens Pickled Herring Spice. Bring to a boil, then let cool completely.

  3. Cut herring fillets into bite-sized pieces.

  4. Layer herring, onion, and optional garnishes in the jar.

  5. Pour the cooled pickling liquid over the herring to fully cover.

  6. Seal the jar and refrigerate for at least 2–3 days before eating (better after 5+ days!).

💡 Tip: Serve chilled with boiled potatoes, sour cream, and crispbread. Also great on a slice of buttered knäckebröd!
