The story of Holmegaard glassworks began in 1825, when Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe applied for permission from the King of Denmark to establish a glassworks at Holmegaard Mose. However, the count died in 1823 without receiving a response to his application.

His widow, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, received permission from the king shortly after her husband's death to establish a glassworks and then decided to complete the plan.

The glassworks was placed next to the bog, as the peat found on Holmegaard bog could be used as fuel for the high temperature needed for the glass furnaces.

In 1825, production began at Holmegaard's glassworks. Initially, the mill only produced green bottles, but Henriette expanded and modernized the product range since glassblowers from Bohemia became involved. The small glassworks next to the bog have grown into a large group for 185 years. In the 20th century, the collaboration began with glass artists who began to design and shape Holmegaard's glassware.
