MEASURING FSH
FSH levels in the body are affected during menopause. When the body's production of estrogen decreases, it leads to an increase in the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level.

FSH levels vary throughout the menopause period and there is an increase until menopause. Especially in the last years before menstruation ends, the FSH level varies greatly from 20 mlU/ml to up to 80 mlU/ml. Then it stabilizes after menopause and ends up at a constant elevated level of over 25 mlU/ml. Since the FSH level varies, several tests are needed to confirm that it is a constant elevated level and not just a temporary rise.

FSH and the menstrual cycle: Just before ovulation, i.e. on day 13-14 after the start of menstruation, there is a peak/increase in FSH (about 20 mlU/ml). Therefore, it is important that the test is taken twice and in the first week of menstruation on both test occasions if the woman is still menstruating, i.e. has not passed menopause. For fertile women under 40 years of age, it is unusual to have elevated FSH levels.

Taking an FSH self-test can be one of the pieces of the puzzle to understand whether you are in menopause. But the woman also needs to look at other factors such as age, medical history, experienced symptoms and the woman's assessment of the degree of these symptoms.
